TINCKNELL SEALS THIRD STRAIGHT MAZDA VICTORY

7 Aug 2019

Harry wins in Wisconsin, moves up to 3rd in the Championship.

Harry Tincknell and Mazda Team Joest once again drove into the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar victory lane on Sunday as the Devonian and his American team mate Jonathan Bomarito scored victory at the IMSA Road Race Showcase at Road America.

It marked the second win of the season for the #55 Mazda RT24-P after their historic win at the Sahlen's Six Hours of the Glen in June, Mazda’s first in seven years. One week later, the No. 77 Mazda won at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park with Tincknell and Bomarito finishing second despite leading the most laps.

Bomarito qualified in fourth place for the two hour 40 minute race and maintained position during the opening laps as the top five contenders all looked closely matched. The Californian moved up to third ahead of the sister Mazda as traffic management around the 4.04 mile Wisconsin circuit proved crucial.

Tincknell took the wheel on lap 32 and immediately moved up to second before mounting huge pressure on leader, Juan Pablo Montoya. He grabbed the lead on lap 37 with a daring, round the outside overtake at the high speed first corner. This would prove to be the race winning move.

In the closing laps, Tincknell withstood pressure to take the victory by a narrow 0.227-seconds with the No. 55 Mazda RT24-P leading a total of 44 laps. The race set a new distance record for an IMSA event at Road America, completing 83 laps (335.98 miles) in two hours, forty one minutes and 43.1 seconds.

Harry Tincknell (GB):

"I couldn't believe when we took the checkered flag in first. I had tears in my eyes on the cool down lap. We had been close all weekend but thought that third place would be a really strong result. However, once I took over the car from Jonathan and was able to stay on the back of the two leaders, I thought that maybe there was a chance. When I got to the lead, from that point on, I had to manage the traffic as best as I could but it was really hard and the last three laps the other cars caught back up to me. Luckily it still worked out and here we are here with the third straight win for Mazda. The team did a fantastic job all weekend so the credit has to go to them”.

Harry’s next round of the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship will be at Laguna Seca, California on the 15th September.
